Water Margin Legos
From 2019 to 2022, I created the Water Margin Podcast, a contemporary English retelling of the classic Chinese novel about a group of outlaws from the 1100s. To complement the podcast and to create some visuals that I could use for social media promotion, I used Legos to re-create scenes from the novel to accompany each of the 134 weekly episodes.
For each scene, I built individualized mini-figures that resembled specific characters from the novel, set up the scene on a homemade mini-stage with a white backdrop, lit the scene with a couple small lights, photographed it, and then did editing and added dialogue boxes in Photoshop. The scenes are rooted in the novel, but also often make references to elements from contemporary culture to give them a more fun, relatable feel, in keeping with the goal of the podcast itself.
