Honoring Duke's First Black PhDs

projects.gradschool.duke.edu/black-history-month/

For Black History Month in 2021, I produced a mini-site for the Duke Graduate School to highlight Duke’s first Black PhD students. I developed the site concept, design, code, and initial content in less than a week, and added additional weekly content throughout the month.

The final site included four pieces of content:

  • A story on Duke’s first two Black PhDs
  • A look at the first wave of Black PhDs, with short bios on each
  • A data visualization of the number of Black PhDs over the years
  • A look at the first Black graduate of each Duke PhD program

The site was a combination of existing and new content. Its rollout was planned in such a way that allowed us to launch an MVP in a matter of a few days with an initial theme-setting piece of content. After that, I worked with an intern to create and launch each of the remaining three pieces on a weekly cadence.

The roadmap and timeline created additional time to produce each piece of content and enabled us to have fresh Black History Month content every week. The package was well-received internally and received some nice feedback when we shared it with some of our external constituents.
