I recently rewatched Bull Durham and was reminded of why it’s the GOAT of sports movies. It also reminded me of a design I created very early on in my career. This was the cover for a special section The Herald-Sun produced to commemorate 100 years of pro baseball in Durham.
Looking back at the cover more than 20 years later, this was a classic entry in the “look who discovered Photoshop filters” showcase. It’s kind of the design equivalent of insisting on starting a first-ball fastball hitter with the heat to announce your presence with authority. So while the movie was playing, I started remaking the cover to see what difference two decades of experience makes. Here’s the result.
